Election High

So first of all, HAPPY ELECTION DAY!!! I hope that everyone in Kansas is out voting instead of reading this. And for everyone at Vassar, I hope you all have voted and voted wisely. It is November 4th, 2008 at long last and that seems very hard to believe. And in a few hours' time the results will begin airing and we will just have to see "what our God in heaven has in store," in the words of Boublil & Schonberg. We have very limited TV access here, so we may wind up going into town to follow the coverage. Either way, none of us are planning on sleeping too much tonight.

Second, Halloween was the most noteworthy recent event and although I was sad to miss out on Madrid with my roommates, it was definitely nice to be in Dublin for the festivities. After being told that Ireland was "not big on Halloween" and having people offer me condolences all semester over missing the American Halloween, I was surprised to go into town and find nearly every person at every club and pub and bar in some sort of costume. We spent most of the night in a decked out, cover-free bar/club called Maguire's dancing with vampires and knights and garda (even the real garda were standing outside singing along to Breakfast at Tiffany's) and a shameless leprechaun or two. So I'm thinking that the only people who suffer during an Irish Halloween are children under 10 who want to trick-or-treat like the Americans but have no chaperone because they're all partying in the city centre. And anyone not in costume seemed to find the holiday worth celebrating, be they smokers, jokers (so many jokers this year), or midnight tokers.

Dear Christine,
I called my dad to see if he is still able to take us to the airport on Thursday and the first thing he said was "I already read it." And, thus, I found out that there is another delightful slice of Ireland available. As I read through, you managed to plant two songs in my head and now they are alternating even though they are not compatible.
We are getting ready to head out to election watch parties. The polls close here in KS in 20 minutes but I see that Vermont has already been called for Obama and Kentucky for McCain. Perhaps you won't have to stay up too late to feel confident in the result!
I wish you were here to share this historic night. I love you.
Love,
Mom
